Commercial pilot - Helicopter

Student already holds a private pilot certificate.

This course is designed for the individual who seeks a career as a professional helicopter pilot. Most often the first employment opportunity for a newly certified pilot is that of Flight Instructor. Voyager Flight Services uses the Robinson R-22 and R-44 helicopters exclusively. Most helicopter training schools use Robinson helicopters which means the most likely first job will be to fly a Robinson helicopter.

Students entering this course must be at least 18 years of age and be fluent in English. Before solo flight the student must hold a third class medical certificate from a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approved physician.

This course will take approximately 8 months. This is based on a minimum of 50 hours dual flight training, 100 hours solo or command flight training and 30 hours ground training. The certificate is granted after passing an FAA oral and flight test.

FAA minimum requirements

  1. Hold a second class medical certificate
  2. Pass an FAA written examination
  3. Obtain a minimum of 150 hours flight time
    that consists of at least:
    1. 50 hours in a heliccopter
    2. 100 hours Pilot in Command including:
      • 35 in a helicopter
      • 10 hours cross country in a helicopter
  4. Pass an FAA oral and flight test
